The Position
-
Under the direction of the Traffic Signal Foreman, assists crew members to repair and maintain traffic signals, school flashers and street lights. Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performs routine maintenance, inspection, and repair of traffic signals, school zone lights, and street lights;
- Installs and replaces traffic signal equipment, hardware, components, signs, and controls;
- Installs and maintains vehicle sensing equipment at traffic signals;
- Monitors and maintains traffic cameras;
- Installs and terminates above ground and below ground electrical wiring and data cables;
- Operates a bucket truck and a variety of other city vehicles;
- Operates a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools;
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls;
- Works an on-call rotation to respond to emergencies and after-hour repair needs;
- Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses
- High School Diploma or its equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in repair and maintenance of mechanical systems or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record, or the ability to acquire within (1) year of hire pending availability of class offerings
International Municipal Signals Association (IMSA), Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX), or approved equivalent Work Zone/Flagger certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire (required). Supplemental Information
- Knowledge of: Construction, installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal infrastructures; traffic signal maintenance practices, procedures, and equipment; National Electric Code (NEC); Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) pertaining to traffic signals and signs; applicable laws, ordinances, regulations, functions, and activities of public works departments.
Skill/Ability to: operate computer using traffic signal software; understand, utilize, and comply with the NEC; understand, utilize, and comply with MUTCD standards for signs and signals; understand basic computer & Ethernet networking principles; operate and work in a bucket truck; and comply with all applicable safety regulations while working on electrical systems in high traffic conditions.
