The Position

The City of Cedar Park is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Recreation Specialist. Under the direction of the Recreation Facilities Manager, the Recreation Specialist staffs the front desk for the Recreations facility. Work includes handling phone inquiries, processing memberships, responding to complaints and resolving conflicts, overseeing the work of part time staff, making reservations, ensuring the weight room equipment is working properly, conducting the silver and fit billing and monthly reports, and setting up gymnasium activities/programs.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Staffs the front desk at the Recreation Center, handling a wide array of questions, issues and functions by responding to customer inquiries complaints and special request;
  • Accept, receive, and/or collect payments for services;
  • Prepares the gymnasium and sets up or assists in setting up classes and other special events;
  • Responds professionally to questions, complaints and inquires by phone, email and in person;
  • Ensures all rules, regulations, and safety policies are properly enforced;
  • Trains part-time and seasonal staff and oversees the work of part-time and seasonal staff assigned to the front desk;
  • Promotes and sells memberships and handles facility rentals;
  • Performs light cleaning and straightening functions, including spot cleaning during the day to handle spills and other hazardous situations;
  • Assists other full-time staff with various projects,
  • Works weekends and holidays as needed; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

High School Diploma or equivalent, plus
One (1) year experience in a gym setting or at a recreational facility; or
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Valid Texas Driver's License, with acceptable driving record.
CPR and First Aid Certification, or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.

Supplemental Information

Knowledge of: personnel policies and procedures; techniques for working effectively with children and the general public; conflict resolution techniques used to identify and diffuse problems.

Skill/Ability to: operate multi-media equipment such as projectors and audio/video equipment; oversee and motivate part-time and season employees and volunteers; operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to computer, fax, and copier; experience in using computer programs such as Excel, Word, Outlook, and a specific payment and reservation systems; and demonstrate proficiency in oral and written communication.
