The Position
-
- Locate and mark underground utilities such as water, sewer, storm sewer, fiber optic, data, and electric lines.
- Document interactions, site information, and utilities in organizational software.
- Communicate with clients, engineers, and management.
- Use a variety of techniques (electrical, magnetic, GPS, blueprint analysis, and/or radar) to locate utilities.
- Responds to Texas 811 tickets by reviewing and prioritizing locate tickets using maps and plans, coordinating with excavators to confirm limits of excavation, utilizing specialized detection equipment and measuring devices, spray painting or marking the area with flags, locating valves and mains, tracing service lines, troubleshooting problems, and repainting destroyed or faded locate markings.
- Electronically files completed locate work orders and logs activities. Ensures that work conforms to local, state and federal government regulations and worker safety and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Assists and coordinates with other utilities and agencies regarding locating and marking underground facilities.
- Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
- Subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations on call rotation
- Performs such other related duties as may be required.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

- High School Diploma, or its equivalent, plus
- One (1) year of experience in Water or Wastewater utility operations or construction; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License and acceptable driving record
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:- Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
- Must be able to lift/maneuver standard 32” Wastewater/Storm Drain manhole lid approximately 210lbs. (using lid pick and/or crow bar)
- Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day
- Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions.
- Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
- Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.

Knowledge of: basic first aid procedures; and safe operating practices.
Skill/Ability to: Correctly use various hand held tools, applying safety standards to prevent hazards; understand and follow directions; make simple mathematical equations; basic computer knowledge and skills; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; deal effectively with the public in stressful situations; tolerate outdoor working conditions including exposure to adverse weather conditions
