The Position

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Technical Services Assistant provides administrative, technical, and customer service support to the Technical Services division. This position assists with the coordination of technical operations, maintenance of records and databases, preparation of reports, and support of departmental systems and processes. The Technical Services Assistant serves as a liaison between staff, vendors, and the public, ensuring accurate information flow and timely resolution of service requests. The role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced municipal environment while supporting the City of Cedar Park’s commitment to excellent public service.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Performs cataloging, searching various databases to download MARC records from credible sources and edit purchased cataloging records for donated and new Library materials of all formats;
  • Maintains bibliographic database;
  • Processes incoming shipments of new library material from various vendors, inspecting items for defects or damages, verifying accuracy of packing slips and invoices and checking for accuracy and completion of purchase orders;
  • Performs processing of cataloged items, reviewing materials completed by library generalists and volunteers for errors;
  • Performs basic bindery repairs to damaged books and audio/visual items, discarding items considered to be damaged beyond repair;
  • Provides assistance at the Circulation and Information Desk as needed;
  • Participates in meetings and workshops to discuss Library topics and follows current library trends;
  • Shelves books as needed
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

This is a part-time position scheduled to work Sunday (mid-shift), Monday (night), Tuesday (morning), and Friday (morning); five hour shift each day.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

An Associate's Degree or the equivalent in Library Science or a related field, plus six (6) months experience in a library setting; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: municipal library operations; machine readable catalogue (MARC) records; Library of Congress (LC) subject headings; AACR 2 and Dewey Classification System; and RDA cataloging rules.

Ability to: understand and follow instructions; delivery quality customer service; establish and maintain effective work­ing relationships with organizations, other employees and the general public; and operate standard office equipment, including fax, copier, calculator and computer using standard word processing, spreadsheet and data inquiry software.
