The Position

The AMI Technician is responsible for reading, recording, installing, repairing, and maintaining the city water meters and metering components.
Job Responsibilities
- Accurately records water meter readings for daily work orders into the work order system.
- Perform water service connections and disconnections as directed.
- Perform leak checks as needed.
- Install, repair, or replace water meters, meter boxes, valves, and regulators.
- Program water meters for automated meter reading (AMI) systems.
- Resolve issues that prevent electronic meter reading or impair meter function, including clearing brush, cleaning meters, adjusting meter boxes, uncovering buried boxes, and removing soil or debris.
- Re-read meters when assigned.
- Assist with routine meter accuracy testing.
- Assist with larger meter sets and change outs as needed.
- Receive and document customer complaints; take or recommend corrective action as directed.
- Prepare, update, and close work orders.
- Communicate with customers regarding service interruptions or other water service issues.
- Assist supervisors with special projects as assigned.
- Safely operate a motor vehicle in compliance with City policies.
- Participate in an on-call rotation schedule.
- May work a rotational schedule when needed, which may include evening hours.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma, or its equivalent.
Certification & License
- Valid Texas Driver's License with acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA)
Knowledge of:
- Basic verbal communication and mathematical principles.
- Locations and layouts of water meters.
Skill and Ability to:
- Troubleshoot, repair, program, and maintain water meters and related electronic components while following safety standards to prevent hazards.
- Learn meter locations and read various types of meters.
- Operate Apple iOS, Android, and Microsoft Windows software and applications.
- Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Operate standard office equipment, including copiers, multi-line phone systems, and computers for data entry, word processing, and spreadsheet creation.
- Use and maintain electronic and handheld tools and equipment for meter reading, installation, and repair.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Maintain a positive and professional public image.
Work Conditions:
Physical Demand
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Able to drive to many locations throughout the day driving with frequent stops
- Able to walk, squat, kneel and reach into meter boxes and tight spaces
- Able to work in a confined space
- Able to use tools
- Able to perform data entry, requires motor skills and hand/eye coordination
- Able to use a ladder while carrying equipment
- Able to pay attention to detail under physical demands
- Able to perform repetitive tasks throughout the day
- Able to sit for extended periods while driving to perform job duties.
Environmental Demand
- This position requires the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and other environmental elements.
- Navigating different types of terrain in different weather conditions
- Uniforms and work safety boots are provided as well as all other equipment and safety equipment needed to perform job duties
- Potential exposure to reptiles, spiders, and insects; use of wasp/insect repellent and water-soluble spray paint required.
