The Position

Assist Treatment Operators with the operation and maintenance of the plant as required by City, State, and Federal guidelines; including, once licensed, collecting water samples, performing lab tests, and recording results; monitoring and maintaining plant equipment; monitoring and documenting chemical usage; and grounds-keeping.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Water Reclamation and Water Treatment Plant:

  • Performs routine inspections of water reclamation facilities, monitors pumps, tanks, chemicals, and filters, and adjusts equipment or chemicals to maintain specified operating conditions.
  • Once licensed, collects periodic water samples from various locations within the facility and performs numerous chemical analyses, including pH, alkalinity, chlorine, turbidity, phosphorous, total suspended solids, nitrogen, etc., and ensure proper calibration of measuring equipment.
  • Calculates various daily, weekly, and monthly chemical usage and water statistics, and records data on logs and charts.
  • Ensures cleanliness of wastewater facilities and cleans equipment as necessary.
  • Performs corrective and preventive maintenance on water reclamation equipment, including pumps, motors, valves, plumbing, gauges, gears, etc.
  • Operates belt press to de-water solids.
  • Routinely calibrates online monitoring analyzers.
  • Performs grounds-keeping duties, including mowing, as required.
  • Operate backhoe and other heavy equipment; and
  • Performs other related duties as may be assigned.

Additional Job Function for Water Treatment Plant:

  • Monitors distribution for the plant with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) System.

Acceptable Experience, Training, Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

High School Diploma or its equivalent.

Water Treatment Plant Apprentice: Ability to obtain Class D Water Treatment Operator License within six (6) months of employment (TCEQ).

Valid Texas Driver’s License applicable to job responsibilities, with an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, practices, and equipment used in water treatment facilities.

  • Plumbing.

  • Welding.

  • Handling hazardous materials, minor electrical repair.

  • Basic chemistry.

  • Pumps and motors.

  • Water chemical analyzing equipment; city, state, and federal water treatment specifications and regulations.

  • Laboratory testing and procedures.

Skill/Ability to:

  • Learn and comply with state and federal regulations applicable to water reclamation facilities.

  • Perform simple mathematical calculations.

  • Operate personal computer and computerized equipment.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

  • Demonstrate proficiency in both oral and written communication.

  • Operate and repair light equipment, such as power tools.

  • Operate and repair medium equipment and machinery, such as commercial mowers.

  • Operate and repair heavy or complex machinery, such as HVAC systems, construction equipment, or wastewater plants.

  • Able to lift up to 75 lbs.
